According to the ZimStats Construction Material Price Index (BPMI) for the third quarter of 2021, a wave of price increases by the Harare Bureau swept the local housing construction sector and slowed the progress of many projects.

The BPMI change rate of ZimStats from June to September was 13.80%, an increase of 5 or 12 percentage points from the 8.68% in June.

Compared with the same period last year, BPMI in September increased by 42.11% year-on-year. These developments have taken place against the backdrop of a surge in the country’s individual housing construction and private sector-led infrastructure development.

The index surge in the third quarter was due to rising prices of construction materials including bricks, construction lime, glazed salt pipes, gravel, glass, copper pipes, paint, storage tanks, cement, corrugated asbestos, galvanized iron pipes and steel windows.

This period also witnessed the price increase of wooden doors, nails, conifers, river sand, steel door frames, water heaters, bolts, switch boxes, faucet boards, bison boards, sinks, locks, cables, wash basins, bathtubs, showers, wall tiles , Vinyl tiles, drainage gauges and termite poison.

Laminated pine, baseboard cedar, baseboard pine, parquet and water heaters all have moderate growth, so their contribution to the BPMI movement is insignificant.

The prices of low-rise suits, pit sand, distribution boxes, ducts, and roof tiles have fallen, thus promoting the balance of BPMI.
